Bad tooling is usually a design problem before it is a machining problem. Tube mill roll design decides how much forming each pass does, where the strip edges meet and how much spring-back the last passes have to absorb — get that wrong and no amount of grinding will fix the pipe.
What the Design Covers
- Flower pattern and number of passes for your diameter and wall.
- Strip width calculation and edge allowance for the weld.
- Roll profile drawings for every stand, issued for your approval.
- Re-design of an existing pass line that marks, ovalises or will not weld.
We model the pass line first and send drawings before machining. If a mill is already running badly, send a photo of the section, the tube size and the current roll layout — often the fix is two passes, not a new set.
Roll design inputs that are usually missing
A design brief that says “ø48 mm tube, 1.5 mm wall” is a start, not a brief. The four inputs that most often change the result are:
- The strip width you actually buy, not the theoretical width.
- Material yield strength, not just the grade name.
- Whether the tube will be bent, swaged or threaded downstream.
- The mill’s stand count and shaft diameter.
Flower pattern decisions
The flower pattern decides how the bend is distributed. Bend too much in one pass and the strip marks, the edges stretch and the weld suffers. Bend too little and you need more stands than the mill has. Good design keeps edge elongation low, keeps the strip centred, and leaves the fin passes to align rather than to form.
When a design is worth redoing
If a mill runs one size well and struggles with another on the same set, the problem is usually the shared flower rather than the operator. A design review that compares the two sizes on the same pass line often shows where a single extra pass, or a different roll split, solves both.
