The first stand on the line. It takes the flat strip and creates the first fold of the tube profile, so it carries the heaviest load and the biggest wear of any roll in the mill.
Why it matters on the line
- The single most important roll on the line: it sets the first fold, and every error here shows up in ovality at the sizing stand
- Carries the full strip tension, so the shaft, the bearing housing and the weldment are sized for that load
- Reground many times over its life, which is why the profile height and the hardness backing matter more than the steel grade alone
- Supplied as a bare roll, a weldment with shaft, or a matched pair with the matching breakdown stand
What we supply
| Item | What we hold to | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Profile height | As your pass line drawing, within 0.05 mm | Sets the first fold and therefore the ovality downstream |
| Hardness | HRC 58–62 after quench and temper | A soft roll wears and the fold radius grows |
| Diameter | Made to your stand, new or as a replacement | Roll diameter decides how many passes the stand can hold |
| Material | D3, D2 or H13 with a vacuum-treated body | Depends on the grade you roll and the duty cycle |
| Surface | Ground and, on request, coated | A coating extends the time between regrinds |
Every item is machined in our own workshop and marked before it is packed, so it goes back to the stand it came from. If you send us a drawing or a sample we work to that; if you are not sure what you need, send us the mill model and the pass line and we will tell you.

Send us the drawing or the sample
A drawing, a photo with a ruler in frame, or the mill model is enough for us to quote and to tell you honestly whether the item should be reground or replaced.
